VINCENT, Frank

No. 4/7447, Private, Walter William "Frank" VINCENT
Aged 19

West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own), 1st Battalion.
Killed in Action on Thursday, 27th May 1915

Walter William VINCENT was born in Barnham,Thetford (according to "Soldiers Died") in 1896 but census records show it as Tivetshall, Norfolk. (just NE of Diss). Registration that appears best is William Walter VINCENT, Depwade Q1-1894 4B:244. He was the son of James and Charity VINCENT (née SMITH).

1901 census... Walter VINCENT [7] was living at The Street, Wickham Skeith with his father James [42], an agricultural labourer born Tivetshall; mother Charity [32] born Thorpe Abbots; sister Matilda[15]; brother Arthur [14], sister Norgett [12]; brother Albert[10] and sister Georgina[3]. Georgina was born in Wickham Skeith but the rest of the children were born in Tivetshall.

1911 census... Aged 20 (according to census), a farm labourer living at New Zealand Cottages, Barnham, Suffolk with his father James, brother Arthur [23] a farm labourer; sister May [16]; sister Louisa [13]; brother Alfred [10];brother Morris [5]. Now all the children are recorded as born in Wickham Skeith. Father James is given as married for 25 years and one child of the nine had died. It is the same family but some strange alterations to names, ages and places has taken place. His mother was away visiting her daughter? Matilda MORRIS at the Cherry Tree Beerhouse, Tendring, Essex.

According to CWGC, his parents were living at Black Dyke, Hockwold some time after Walter's death. No clue has been found as to the name change for the Hockwold memorial.

He enlisted in York. "Soldiers died" incorrectly has him born in Barnham
Having been in billets at Hooplines, on 24th they moved into trenches at Le Touquet, relieving the Durhams. The war diary is very brief:- 27.5.15. Trenches [casualties 9 wounded] Lt Col F W TOWEY took over temporary command of Brigade. Major G. LANG assumed command of the Battalion.
Houplines is on the NE edge of Armentieres and Touquet is a short distance further NE.

CWGC records just Walter William Vincent of the 1st West Yorkshires dying that day.
